I have a great number of 250-400 word essays on many subjects across many sites for months now and I have only seen one or two "natural links".
The trouble with the natural links is that they are usually from website run by non-pros. So they are generally from low traffic websites with no PR.
The links you need are generally run by website owners who are crafty little buggers and will want something in return for the link.
An even better idea, which I gleaned from JS and PC was to manufacture links. Nothing beats a self-propagating 24x7 Link Factory set to full blast.
