Okay from what I've read, the clipping mask has been around since v6. So, do this.

-Open the image you want to use as the fill for your text.

-In your working file (canvas) write your text then drag your fill-image into that canvas. (of course you can get your text and fill-image together any way you want, this is just one method)

-Set your fill-image as the layer OVER the text. Make sure the fill-image layer is selected then hit ALT-CTRL-G.

edit....

oh and if you want a stroke around the text, just add it like you normally do.
