We'll do ourselves in. We don't need any help from cosmic forces. Everyone seems to agree that oil will run out someday. The only disagreement is exactly when. That single event will bowl over our economy and lifestyles unless some technological miracle comes along (and they have in the past; look up the story of Norman Borlaug). We're also depleting our fresh water supply in irresponsible ways. It makes up only 3% of the entire earth's water supply, and some are using it to make the southwest into one big California. That can't last.
None of this means that the human race will die out completely, of course. But it does suggest a significant reduction in the earth's population. Too many people and not enough resources to support them all could bring starvation and war on a mass scale. Without a viable replacement for cheap petroleum energy those remain very likely possibilities.
