My question may seem obvious, but does anyone actually know how Google's search function works? Is everyone basing their knowledge on trial and error? Is there a Google insider out there who is giving out Google's secrets?

I understand that industry experience is the drive behind the whole SEO concept. Are the big SEO firms in trouble when Google changes its algorithm?
