To retain traffic you need to have a service that entices people to sign up for using their email. Then you send out a news letter with your blog posts in it. Feedburner has a get posts by email signup you can put on your site thats great for that.

Of course the other great way is to submit to social bookmark sites like Digg, Reddit, Danogo, Delicious, etc. You'll get indexed by google and increase your page rank.
