If you have a specific niche which you can write about I think the first thing you should do is start making blogs, squidoo lenses etc. focussing on your niche, make them good and get them indexed and they will provide you with a solid foundation for marketing to that niche in whatever way you choose.
As well as providing you with a promotion platform you can also use these pages and sites to do some market research - try to identify a gap in the market, is there a guide to some aspect of your niche which you could write?
Write a brief report which you can give away to build your mailing list.
