Set up new site for USA?

I run a UK-based website offering services to clients in the UK / USA.
However, this site is UK-hosted, with UK spelling and would, at first glance be perceived as a UK-only company.

I am now considering starting a new site aimed primarily at the US market with a .com website address then link to this from my current site for any visitors from the US.

Is this is a good idea? Would I be penalised by search engines for having 2 sites, in similar markets but different countries both registered in my name?

My idea is to create a site completely aimed at the US market - it will not be a carbon copy of my UK based site.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
