Cool Html or xhtml for new web design? I am confused

I have google to find out which is better for SEO purposes between xhtml and html.

I become confused after visiting a few SEO forums.

I am asking a web designer to redesign my website but he said he will do it in xhtml and he will validate it.

In one forum, it says xhtml rules are complicated. For example, if there is an extra "/" in the metatags, then the website is no longer xhtml.

I am confused what to choose html or xhtml esp for SEO and ranking purposes.

thanks
