Backlinks are important in 2 ways.
1) First it improves your web page's rank.
2) Second it drives some traffic from the site from where the back link is coming.

So, we cannot say that the back links are not important at all. Most of the business depends on the back links as most of the sites cannot be on the top search positions.

But back links should be "Quality Back links". Quality means
a) Back link should be from high PR site
b) It should come from the site which has the same theme as your site's.
c) The anchor text of your back link should be your keywords.

And also make sure that the back link is not having with "No Follow" tag, or the back link will not be considered to improve your page rank by the search engines, like google.

So, i think it is clear what is the importance of back links.

You see, I am not against the back links:-) I just posted the above post to elaborate the importance of onsite optimization.
