It has been touched upon already in a few different posts but I would have to say the one piece of advice I would recommend to anyone is to learn to read the SERPS.
Look at what ranks for the terms you are interested in. Pick apart anything you can about how they got there. Things like:
Quantity of links
Quality of links
Anchor text
On page factors
When you read the SERPS you are looking directly at what actually works and then you have to try to reverse engineer it as best you can.
