Once you give out your account number they can bill you forever. You are right and they are wrong but there is an Ocean and no telling how many courts between here and there. I wish I could be more positive but I can't.
The safest thing for you to do is close that bank account and get a new account number. Never give the new account number to anyone or company that you are not 100% sure of.
Explaining the situation at the bank may make it possible to get some of the fees waived and allow a channel for any refunds that come.
