Help with understand affiliates

Yep, I am a newbie!
I am just wondering if someone could please explain to me how affiliate revenue works. Or even point me in the direction where I could understand it better?
I am trying to wrap my lil ole mind around it but it just is not clicking.

Affiliate revenue comes when you convert a visitor to your site to a paying customer for another site. Instead of being paid when your visitor clicks their ad, you are paid when the customer clicks their ad, visits their site, and then makes a purchase of some kind. Consider affiliate revenue a way to get paid only when the advertiser gets paid. Furthermore, there are a ton of products and services our there to affiliate, so finding one that matches your niche is super easy.

Sign up at a place like clickbank. You will then have access to ALL of the products being sold on there, and can promote them, receiving a hefty commission for each product you sell (sometimes as high as 75% of the sale, it's crazy).
