My advice would be:

1.Post regularly...keeping the SEO in mind
2.Participate in Social Media
3.Get the Inbound links consistently...

I promote my blogs mainly by doing free directory submission to relevant directories. My blogs have quality contents and I get approximately 75% approvals.

Promoting your site is depend on what type of site and your plan. If you plan to focus on traffic around 200 UV/day do some blog commenting and social bookmarking already enough for 1st month.

Just add a link to your website in your signature of v7n and you get free dofollow back links.

You need to optimize your blog on those keywords which has high search volume, also collect lots of quality link backs from your niche sites and directories. take part in forums like v7n, DP and other forums, and also submit one press release about your blog services, niche and theme and submit your blog in all major dofollow and no follow soial bookmarking sites, than you will get more traffic by following these all traffic terms.

Yes, That's good idea to submit blog in blog directories, it's useful for traffic and also one way links. RSS submission is also one of nice suggestion. Thanks for sharing nice information.

Yeah they are all right just keep on building links and be just be sure you have a good content in your blog so that those people that will visit your site will able to like your content and probably they'll come back again.
