Yes.

I'm going to be covering this in my blog promotion guide, so don't want to give too much away but make the decision if you host the blog on your business website, or create a new domain and host it on another server.

Write unique content that people will enjoy reading - not marketing articles and self promotion.

Blogs can definitely help generate more traffic. Search engines (at least Google) seem to like them and if you post frequently they come back and spider the site often. A larger site is generally a plus when it comes to seo inpart because it gives you more opportunities to be found and you can optimize many pages for many niche keyword phrases.

A blog can open up your site to being found in many places it otherwise wouldn't be found such as technorati. You want to set up your blog to send out pings when you post or at least manually ping the blog engines through a blog pinging service.

Having a blog though isn't any magic pill. You do need to work on it and set it up to be seo friendly. The key really is to post consistently. More is good, but consistency is key and you also want to have something to say. There are so many blogs out there so if you are a good writer and can provide interesting content it will help immeasurably to keep people coming back.

Klaas were you weird before you starting reading marketing articles? I enjoy reading them too, especially after midnight it seems. Of course I've always been a bit off so I'm not sure it has anything to do with reading those articles.

Don't know really, this is the first time I'm being asked to be honest! But then again, I'm already reading them since I can read so... don't know much about that time before I started it!

IMO blogs can attract traffic for your website but it actually depends on the type of your site and the blog and of course your target visitors.

Sorry, what I meant when I said 'marketing articles' I meant articles which are written completely to promote or advertise the business. I didn't mean articles which were informative, and helped you market your own business.

Blogs are a very good source of traffic to your site. There are many ways in which blogs can have a positive influence on your site.

I've been trying a couple of methods and I'm not sure whats going to be best yet.

I've started an all WP site, that seems to be doing well because of backlinks.

I've also started some blogger blogs on and off site but still theme related. Its just not I update the site via blogger with new articles. Its going to take a while to see what is the best area to concentrate on to get the most bang for my buck.

Anyone else try this sort of thing?

Yep, blogs are helpful in getting traffic for your site. Blog contains updated content & informative posts, so visitors come to your blog frequently. This helps in getting traffic for your site.

I am actually trying both. On my buildingbodies.ca site I have my workout section on the same host here www.buildingbodies.ca/exercise but I also am trying a few blogs offsite in blogger pointing to differant sections of the site in the off chance that these may be "external links". I really have no idea but I thought I would try the shot gun approach since noone had any real hard opinions on the matter.

Pros and cons. I think the external links from the off site blogs are good as well as the odd extra vistor that may come in through surfing around. The con is that I have a real hard time writing original content for a blog that is not contributing to my own sites content.

My blog is on my own site. I wanted it to help grow the content of the site and never really considered having it on another domain.

I think the only advantage of having it be on an external domain is for the links, but somehow I don't think it's much more adavantage than having the links be internal. It would depend some on where the blog is hosted though. If it's hosted on a domain on the same server I doubt there's much additional benefit in the links, but if it's hosted on a different class c ip block the links would most likely carry more weight.

Of course with two domains you have to sites to market, which may be good or bad depending on your point of view. It can present more opportunities, but also more work.

For me the decison was really wanting to grow one site instead of two and the blog is tied into the services I offer. If I were to blog on a completely different subject I would use a different domain.

Blogs are awesome for traffic, they also help you by presenting yourself with a human touch. You may be going to a Ford dealership because of the brand ... but it often depends on the sales person whether you wind up buying or not
