How much blog traffic needed to get a large amount of comments?

I'm keen on adding comments to my blog but I'm worried that the amount and quality of comments will be low.

How much traffic is normally required to receive a high amount of comments?

Traffic does not determine the number of comments. It's more about how you post and the subject matter.

Anyone care to share how to prompt more comments, becides asking for them? That'd be neat.

Interesting articles make for interested readers that comment. Articles in the form of questions, or controversial topics also spur commenting.

Traffic does relate to the number of comments you're likely to get, but you need to start with good content.

I think comments also need to build some momentum. Most people don't want to be first to post one, but as they see more and more there they become more likely to comment themselves.

More traffic certainly leads to more opportunites to get comments, though what and how you write will also play a role. You can try asking questions in your posts. or writing something controversial.

Most of the active blogs I see tend to have a small core of active commenters and then a few others that post here and there. I think building that base of active posters can go a long way toward getting others to comment.

It's hard to get people to comment. I often ask open ended questions in mine, but no-one bothers. I've been thinking that perhaps that's because comments are too simple - if comment streams get too long, they become unweildy.

Does everyone think it would be helpful to have forum threaded style comments on blog posts?

There's an open ended question for you

I was thinking of running a blog in the type of a forum to get more comments, but I can't of a suitable way to do that.

Maybe comments aren't that important, after all. First you strive to get them, then you tolerate the spam and amount of comments, then you disable comments. But what do you get from comments? Extra customers? Don't think so.

The only benefit I see is talking with people you related to the post and thus gain a different perspective. But from this point of view, getting comments isn't the whole point of posting.
