I take it you mean feedburner? I would like some input on this as well.

There are different types of feeds. For example, atom feeds are not readable by all aggregators, but RSS is. FeedBurner can then convert the atom feed and produce it's own more accessible cousin, rss.

Is that all it does? Wordpress generates RSS 2 feeds by default. I have seen feedburner counters showing the number of subscribers, which I guess can be encourage more subscribers?

Sure, feedburner offers more than just that, but the best place to look for answers would be the feedburner site itself.
