How to promote your site with a blog?
I just launched a site at prapta.com and I wanted to market the site using a blog but have no idea how to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just make a blog about your site, the news, the updates, the latest happenings or make a blog about something related to your site. (e.g. if your site is about cricket bats, than make the blog about cricket) Then you should provide a link back to your site. This would be the best way to go in my opinion.

I wonder the same thing, quite frankly. I don't quite understand the whole pinging, rss-ing, etc. Anyone have a newbie-friendly resource that explains this stuff?

hmmm IMO, the best introduction to all the jazz can be found at the Wordpress Tutorials section.
Feel free to add to my rep if you found that it helped.

When you write a post, there is an option for "Allow Pinging?".
Pinging is an auto way of updating your feed in the various directories with your updated information.
So when people search in Technorati, and the services it will show your newest post, and that you update regularly.
I believe this option is only in (Self Hosted) Wordpress. I think blogger has a predefined set of pings, but I am not sure.
In wordpress if you go to your dashboard and click "Options"-> "Writing",
at the bottom of the page is an area called "Update Services".
That is where you list the services that you want "Pinged" and they alert the blogoshpere that you have updated.
In that little box, copy and paste these services:

(these are not links, they are ping addresses)
<edit>
I forgot a feed monitoring service. You will definitely want a feed service to monitor your RSS feed stats, and they also give you promotion assistance with graphics, (that orange "Subscribe" button) and if you have a podcast feed, and a whole set of different parameters just for your feed.
The best one that I have found and the one that most people use is Feed Burner.
"Allows blog owners and podcasters the ability to manage their RSS feeds and track usage of their subscribers."
If readers are interested in your blog, they may choose to subscribe to your updated posts, podcast, or even just the comments, which they can read on their desktop, email client, feed reader, PDA, Cell phone, or favorite blog directory or search engine like Technorati. Feed Burner will do that for you. and that is also why you have to "Ping".
Your blog address, and your feed address are not the same.
This is my blog address: http://www.124bpms.com
and this is my (RSS) Feed address: http://feeds.feedburner.com/124bpmscom
And this is my podcast feed: (they can be combined using "Smart Feed" from Feed Burner)
http://www.124bpms.com/?feed=podcast
I also have an iTunes Feed:
(Yours of course will be different, but many first time bloggers assume they are all the same. If anyone doesn't know how to find their feed, just post a link to your blog, and I will point it out to you.)
</edit>
That should about cover it, and you won't have to waste time with manually pinging with a third party service everytime you post.
You still have to check the "allow pinging" option, or leave it checked, when you post.
After all what good is having a blog, if nobody knows you are writing. Right?
This should get you on your way to now start doing all the Exchange Links, Write Articles and the other stuff people tell you. This stuff is first, all the other things that come after this will be in vein if you don't handle the basics first, and these are the basics believe it or not.
This is your foundation. now you can go out and get some readers.

just setup the site and install wordpress. you can go at http://themes.wordpress.net and download some theme you want. after that, just talk anything about your site and submit it to directories and blog directories.

Create a blog that is related to your site, update the blog content everyday and so the user will read it, add the link of your site. Submit your blog to a blog directories, feeds, rss and ping. Participate in forums or blogger forum with your email signature of your site and blog. You can submit it to social bookmarking site, or social network.

If it's your own stuff it is. If it's other people's articles and you don't have permission, that's called plagiarism. That's generally considered a bad thing.

There are services like blogsvertise that can get your website's PR and link-to numbers way up. I suggest it.
