Everyone has posted great suggestions for a new blogger, but still dancing around the main issue.
I have struggled with that same question with my own blogs for months, and after careful consideration and changing designs countless times..hacking templates and themes...trying many, many widgets, and plugins..there was always something missing that just didn't make my blog look the way that I wanted it to look.....
That something was that I suck! I have no design skills, I don't know enough code to design my own, and after looking at several hundred themes...none of them were what I wanted, nor could I hack them to make them what I wanted.
After you look at a few hundred themes, they all are basically the same.....2 column, 3 column...columns on the left, columns on the right...the only thing that makes them stand out is the creative header, (and of course the content)
So the best revelation that I have had since I started blogging was to open up the wallet and buy a few professionally designed themes, that had what I wanted, and tweak them to my liking.
I am very happy that I did. It is hard to admit that you have no talent in that area, but my time is better spent doing what I do, and let the pros do what they do.
As a blogger, it is incredibly rare that you are going to master all of the trades that you need to know to be a successful blogger:
SEO
Content
Design
Marketing
Adwords..and the list goes on. So I decided that the one thing that I KNOW I am not good at is.. the design, and now I can spend more time with content, and relationships with contributers than spending countless hours trying to figure out how to make it appear more professional.
Hope that helps, and good luck.
