MyBlogLog and blog promotion
Is it doing you any favours? There are several of these "recent reader community" type widgets and communities now. In my experience they have not brought me much traffic, perhaps 3-4 unique visitors per week, if that.
I can imagine if I spent a few hours everday clicking on other peoples' avatars it might bring in a little more traffic, but that seems like a lot of work for littel traffic. Is there a secret to it? How is it converting for you?

I have the same question. Which of the blog social media things are worth focusing on and at which stage?
The ones that i've put time into for very little results:
Majors:
technorati
digg
stumbleupon
Minors:
mybloglog
blogcatalog

Technorati brings me minimal traffic. I have also found it depends on the niche. However, even on busy blogs it brings no more than a handful of uniques per day.
Stumbleupon can bring very good traffic if you work persisitently, and have the right sort of material for the Stumble crowd. Stumblers seem to be very visual oriented so blogs involving media do very well there. I have had anything from 100 uniques per day to over 3000 in one hour as a result of Stumbling. It is a bit hit and miss, but worth some effort.
MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog has been hopeless for me. Never tried Digg.

Yeah, I have to agree mybloglog doesn't bring many viewers and they're not interesting in reading blogs either.

Same to me. It's less than 5 visitors that are coming from mybloglog.

I had a SEO expert in today who was talking about the "Trust Rank". He felt that social media feedback would be used by the search engines as another input in their algorithm. Any thoughts?

Well I think the problem isn't about MyBlogLog and Blog Catalog... It's on your own blog and posts that could make your site works good in terms of traffic...

Agree little traffic after 2 years. I have actually posted 4 web sites and 1 blog there over time.
I have 5784 contacts and belong to 2411 communities on mybloglog.
I have 93 keywords for 1, 101 for another 17 for another and 32 for the 4th one, oh yah 6 for the blog because it is new.
This is where my progress is with the MyBlogLog.
Logic...

I don't think that you focus more on social media if your longing for traffic, I experienced submitting my site to most of them but they give my site a little numbers of visits.

I have used mybloglog as a means of building a community of users that enjoy the content I'm writing on the blog. It doesn't provide a ton of traffic but it does provide another way for someone who is part of mybloglog to be part of my community.

digg & stumbleupon is very good if you do submit a great article, else you will get nothing.

you should have a good content first before submitting to different blog directories, but I bet digg and stumble upon gives me more traffic for our site.

I like digg very much.
It can increase the site traffic a lot and Increase the SERPs of your site, too.

Digg can give you some nice bumps every now and then, because it is used by regular people, not just webmasters.
All the others have lost their appeal to me, because it's just a bunch of other bloggers and webmasters begging you to read their blog.
It was a nice idea at first, but other bloggers only visit your site, because they want you to visit theirs. Not because they are interested in the niche, and they definitely do not click or buy anything.
To me the traffic is worthless, and although I still have 9 sites in My Blog Log, I want non-webmasters reading...they buy stuff.
It's nice to be part of communities, and it's great to be able to show your stuff off to people that appreciate it, but in the long run, it's about making money, not a few pats on the back.
If I get any visitors from any of them, it's a nice surprise, and usually that is the only time I log in.
