I have found that posting comments on my competitors blogs (not black hat comments but that actually relate to the post) actually get a lot of visitors.

Has anyone else had a good experience using this tactic?

Yes it does, so long as you provide insightful and on-topic comments

If those blogs happen to be dofollow, you get some PR juice as well...

thats right... it would be better if you enable comment moderation to your blog to avoid spam comments...

Posting comments that add to the topic or discussion on similar blogs is an excellent way to gain new readers and create backlinks to your blog.

As long as they are comments of real value most blog owners would welcome them it is the one and two word comments or lists of links as long as your arm that really annoy people.

You can share your views regarding on the topic, Just don't comment spammy messages like introducing your site, etc.

Yes,comment posting can bring helpful in attracting visitors. But remember, the comment should be authentic and related to the post.

Your traffic stats would increase and so would the comments on your posts, maybe even subscriptions to RSS but the question is would the spammy comments put other uses off visiting the site?

That's is why moderation is a must. You get to filter out spammy comments to help maintain your blog's quality.

The spammers are those who post comments on your blog and leaving a link pointing to their site, then definitely they are the one who receives PR link juice. You need to moderate the comments on your site so that it will not looks like a junk.

What tools do people use for moderation, i've seen different ones on different blogs, ones where the post doesnt appear until moderated or where it does with a note next to it stating awaiting moderation.

Askinet is the best for comment protection. Lots of blogs have no-follow, so commenting is pretty much useless.

I moderate comments on my blogs so whenever a spammer posts his links on his comment, I delete it right away.

Anyway, it does help to comment on blogs that are in the same niche as you are in. You get traffic and at the same time, you might become friends with your competitors and get a link back.

Avoid spammers as they will only do nothing but to spam , i suggest you moderate your comment page.

you can avoid spammers by using some tools like Askinet...

If you are using blogspot, you can set the comment to be moderated. Sign-in to your blogger account, under "Settings" tab, click the comments link. Scroll down the page until you see the "Enable comment moderation". Click the "yes" radio button. That's it.
