The Impact of Photos on Blog Traffic

I was looking at our web site's page visits statistics from Google Analytics and saw that the top 4 pages in terms of page views were the following:
  • Home Page 11,000
  • Tips With Pictures Category Page 9,000
  • Ecoenergy Page 1,500
  • Color / Colour Coordination Article 1,400
  • Kitchen
Remodeling Part 8 Article 1,300

Wow! The Tips with Pictures category page is #2 for Page views with a 6 to 1 superior visitation advantage over the third place page which is our static ecoENERGY page. And the Tips With Pictures category page is not that far behind the home page which logic tells me is going to be the #1 page of any web site.

If nothing ever would, this data from my own site convinces me that when one is being entertained, one want's the visuals. This I would think is especially so if the verbiage on a page is not in one's native language.

The same articles that are on the Tips With Pictures category page are the same as on the Home page, except that if an article on the Home page does not have a picture it does not find its way to the Tips With Picture category page.

And, all this without the use of any SEO plugin for the photos.

Does anyone else have any such statistics or thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Dan

My website is still inside the bubble wrap, but the traffic for different parts of the website is about the same as your findings. I used to put all my blog entries, pictures, and news together. I recently split it out to separate add-on domains, and I have noticed that the pictures page has about 250 to 300 visitors a day, and my main site has about 250 to 300 a day. Both are increasing at blinding speed, but it still amazes me that the picture area has taken off in only 4 days since it's creation.

Only difference is the adsense revenue. The pictures area generate a small amount of income, but the main website makes the bulk of it. But it makes sense, people are only there to look at the pictures

I love it when a blog has good pictures within the post. It draws my eye in. The picture should be related to the content of that post. If a site doesn't have any pictures, I would be less likely to read it.

I have one particular image I use in my Q&A posts which gets hit hard each day.

In fact, some days it accounts for more than 50% of my traffic. Not entirely sure how I feel about that though. I would rather see traffic from people who read rather than someone hunting for an image.

Wink

Images have great impact on the traffic of any website or blog because most internet users are interested on seeing photos that are attractive and eye-catchy.. They help blog or website increase its stickiness...

A lot of my visitors from one of my sites usually get there through Google Images. It does have a big impact in terms of unique visits, and eventually, returning visits. That's the main reason why I never forget to put alt texts on my images.

In my own experience, people do love searching for photos. They go directly to my site. But remember not to spam photos on your blog. You can post at least 2-3 images per post.

I also noticed that majority of my blog traffic are came from photo/images. Alt attribute is very helpful when you use it in your images.

Once your image is indexed by Google Images, it can be a good source of traffic for your site. I get around 100 uniques a day just from Google Images.

2-3 photos per post is a good ratio unless your post is something that is supposed to show pictures. If that is the case, you can try posting thumbnails of the pictures themselves but don't forget the alt text!

graphics unplug is liked by many
I think pictures that relate to the post or topic is pretty important. I'd rather read an article with pictures in between rather than just a whole load of text. I guess its a psychological thing, I get put off immediately if the article seems too long, I won't even intend to read it.

It looks like people love pictures, as a result of the graphic-heavy web.
