It's a two different things,
Firstly, with regards to blogs, all you need is an article or picture that you can post in order to have regular updates of your blogs.
While in Forums, all you need is to have a good and active members in order to have your forum updated (which I think can consume a lot of time )

Why not do both? You could directly promote your site using blogs (you can't do that in forums).

She has a point, why not do both of them?... In this way you could do both promoting and being a good forum member (you can gain backlinks too from these methods)...

I think the topic is about creating a site that would either be a forum or a blog. bot about building links or promoting in this two sites...

why not? a lot of people use forums to promote their websites through signatures...
anyways, whichever you would choose to build, either a forum or time, you would need visitors to make them successful. you would need visitors to become active members in forums and get some quality posts from them to make your forum popular and get it earning and you would need quality articles made by you to get visitors to your blogs. I think that the easier site to build would be blogs, you wouldn't need that much maintenance since you would only be posting articles everyonce in a while and would only be moderating comments while in forums, you would need to moderate every posts that are made by the members and ensure that spamming is not made. you would also need to get that forum active to get more content.

I am not well in commenting but I think doing both at the same time would be beneficial. Like Jeniel has said. Good luck to your plan.

Blogs and forums are completely different from each other. As years passed by, blogs are getting more popular because of their content and they have been used as a tool for promoting a product. On the other hand, forums are also helpful in terms of building a reputation which in return can also help u in a campaign. As what others said, try doing both to benefit from their success.

saidul, Personally id go with both Forum and Blog.
Create a forum called "News and Announcements" then use all the topics posted in here to output to the homepage of your website. This means you have forum and blog, yet if the user wishes to comment on your blog post/topic they are directed to a forum, where they can comment or write a total new topic about something else.

If you build a forum, expect at least a year before you get any real traffic. And then expect close to 2 years before you get any good or great traffic.
Forums are a labor of love. They require a lot of time, dedication and effort. Most people are not ready for what a forum requires. Out of all of the forums that are started, somewhere around 85% will be closed before 6 - 8 months. Before a year, just about all forums that open will close or be abandoned.
So before you open a forum, ask yourself - are you ready to dedicate at least 1 year to this project? And that means links building, updates, dealing with the drama kings and queens, backups, drama, and more drama and asking yourself why nobody is joining your site. Forums can bring out the best and the worst in people. And they usually bring out the worst. Meaning that grown people will post some of the most childish stuff. And you have to deal with that.
And then, if your site stays on line long enough, and your forum grows enough, you have to listen to people complain that the moderators are not doing their job. When your site gets 2,000+ post a day, its impossible to moderate all of that.
And then, some members will post copyrighted material. So you might get nasty emails saying that you will be sued if you do not remove the material. Or the hosting company will tell you to remove the content or they will close your account.
the list goes on and on.

It depends how much work you want to put in to it. Forums take alot more work to get up and running. A blog on the other hand is just you. No community to build and maintain.

i agree..very well said. if i may add. in forums you don't control the forum. they may suddenly banned, strip your link and etc. They are also tougher to maintain and requires sociable skills., while in blogging..it's all on you! you control everything.

If you combined both, then you'll have a more effective online marketing especially when it comes to selling products.
