Try to manually upgrade your blog.
Don't forget to backup your database.

Yes, you need to back up the database first.
If you are facing problem with the wordpress automatic upgrade, then get plugin that does the work for you.

If you're using current version of WP blog it is pretty easy to upgrade to the recent version just by a click through your dashboard alternatively you can download the package and install it manually.

The latest release 2.8.3 is a security fix so one should definitely upgrade to it. Highly Recommended.

Check Versions.php present in wp-include folder on your root directory. It should have Wordpress 2.7 as the version name. You can try upgrading manually. To manually upgrade Wordpress blog, refer Wordpress 2.8 Upgrade

Hmm that is interesting... It should actually offer you to upgrade when a new version is available... But you can do that yourself, first take a full backup from your cpanel, you need to have backup your database plus uploads, then delete all the files and make a new installation using your old database plus uploads then it should be fine, but don't do that if you are not sure... and make sure you have a full back-up so you don't loose anything...

I've had this problem before and opted for a complete reinstall from scratch... Even though it was painful it was worth doing the upgrade.

Now with Wordpress Automatic upgrade you can easily upgrade your blog, you don't need to do it manually.

The problem could be that your hosting is not supporting PHP5 (which WordPress uses now) or initially you set the blog up using PHP4. You may have to add a line to your .htaccess file to overcome this.

I would be willing to bet that this is the issue.

I don't know, never found such problem so far.
You already got replies, manually upgrade is the alternative.
Just back up your SQL files on your hosting cpanel, upload the newest wordpress using FTP and don't forget to set you wp-config.php file since I used to have problem with that before

Dont do the automatic upgrade thing - your not learning anything.
Learn how to install the updates by hand - learn how to upload the files and how to run the upgrade script yourself. At least then you will be learning something.

I used to have WordPress 2.65. I use the plug in Wordpress Automatic upgrade to update to WP 2.8. It may work.
Don't forget to backup the database and the site before you make any changes.
Good luck!
