You can build a blog in a directory in the root of your site's web space - that's what I've done with the currency trading blog in my signature - it's part of a larger site
If you just want SEO benefit then you can't use the same hosting account - Google will see the ip of your site and your blog is the same - and discount any link value from your blog to your site
Google look for all sorts of clues to see if sites linking to each other belong to the same person - ip, name, address, telephone number, email address, adsense account, etc.
If you just want SEO benefit you should use free hosted blog platforms using fake info, or simply do blog commenting, forum posting, article marketing, etc.
