What I was getting at is the non-promotion/sharing of the article with the guest author's social networks. I point this out as a requirement for those that guest author posts for my blog.

I also explain to the author's the benefits of filling out the author bio and adding their social links for the their profile pages.

5 Reasons Your Guest Post Pitches Are Failing

This is a good read.

Quote:
Since the inception of Penguin and Panda, SEOs have been shifting from link building strategies that may have involved anything from mass article submissions, social bookmarking, directory submissions in bulk, purchasing links, as well as other frowned upon strategies and have recently jumped on the guest posting bandwagon.

Who can blame them? When correctly executed, guest posting can be a great way to promote your own business or product to loyal readers of other websites that are related to your niche and at the same time, increase your author rank and organic visibility!

How to Fill the Giant Guest Post Hole On Your Blog

This is a good blog post to read. You might even edit your guest blog post page when you are done reading it.

Quote:
Is there a sign on your blog silently screaming, “Please don’t help me grow?”

It’s a shame that most of us put that sign up without even noticing.

From the newest bloggers to the most well-established ones, that’s what happens when you don’t have clear and public guest post submission guidelines.

Even if you don’t want guest posts right now, this is still crucial.

And it’s vital for publishing that first guest post on your blog or breathing some fresh air into a stagnant posting pattern.

There are surprising benefits to creating or updating your guidelines, not to mention huge perks in making them public. Here, I’ll share these hidden benefits with you and explain how even little blogging fish can become bigger, stronger swimmers.

How to Totally Screw Up Your Guest Blogging Efforts

Nice posted some good points that most of you should already know by now.

Quote:
The benefits of guest blogging are long and well documented--provided you go about it in the right way. I've often wondered if guest blogging will become the new link exchange if we aren't careful (where there is a will there is way to spam it) but I still believe that guest blogging is a great and necessary addition to any SEO and content marketing campaign. But just like any other component of SEO there is a right and wrong way to go about it...

Three Entrepreneurs That Went All-in with Guest Posting and Won

This was a good read.

Quote:
In 2012, Google made it clear that automated directory requests and spun articles spread across thousands of blogs and article receptacles wouldn’t cut it as a sign of quality any longer. Content publishers must make a conscious decision: Adapt and prosper or keep spinning Ezine articles and remain in obscurity forever.

The prior sounds like the more desirable choice to me.

But how does one adapt? One way is to finally start producing content worth being published on websites with a real audience. One of the most straightforward ways to do that: Guest posting on high-quality blogs.

In this article, we will examine three entrepreneurs that went all-in with their guest posting efforts – and it paid off with....

The Do’s and Don’ts of Guest Posting for Major Blogs

This I believe is old news but it's still a good read.

Quote:
What do Mashable.com, BusinessInsider.com and Huffington Post all have in common? For one, each blog captures thousands of unique visitors and tens of thousands of page views in a single day. Second, they all accept contributions from guest authors, creating the potential to drive massive amounts of traffic to your website with just a single guest post.

But there’s got to be a catch. You’ve probably got to be a big name blogger with a huge audience like ProBlogger.com’s Darren Rowse to be eligible for publication on major blogs like that… Right?

The Ultimate Guide to Advanced Guest Blogging

Another good read.

Quote:
With “content marketing” being the indisputable SEO buzzword of 2012, we can expect 2013 to see an onslaught of marketers trying to build links with guest posts. The growth in this market will cause some sites to lower their guest posting standards, others to raise them, and still more to stop accepting them altogether. Google will target low quality guest posts with increasing zeal, and it will get harder to see results if the effort and strategy aren't there. We're going to help you combat this by sharing how we got posts up on ProBlogger and Search Engine Journal, and by introducing you to our strategy for success with our clients.

Apply the Golden Rule to Guest Posting

It's a good rule to follow.

Quote:
The Golden Rule is a great to apply to your entire outreach process. From your writers and the people you are outreaching to, all the way to the content you are pitching, using the Golden Rule ensures that great content is produced for great sites, resulting in quicker responses and better return on investment for your client or company.

Minor rant on guest posting

As a whole, search marketers are known for taking a good marketing tactic and overdoing it to the point that the search engines stop trusting the signals. Think about it: directories, commenting, sponsorship, articles, blog rolls, footer links, and more.

Outreach is not a tactic; it is a relationship building strategy that has been around since we could communicate with each other. Guest posting, which is the...

I think there you have what is commonly thought of "guest blogging abuse" and it is highly likely that your guest blogger only intention was to build a backlink from your site. These types of guest blog posts are usually written by SEO companies as part of a link building campaign. I'm not not saying thats a bad thing but it means that there is very little socialising or connection happening.

A quality guest blogger will remain active on your site for usually more than one post as their itention is to build thier reputation and brand and be seen as interesting and knowledgeable of thier subject matter. They will also stick around to respond to commenters too as again this about brand reputation building.

Finding and Evaluating Guest Posting Opportunities in 2013

It's been awhile since we updated this thread. Here is something to read.

Quote:
Over the last 12 months, guest posting has become one of the most popular link-building strategies. And, there is a reason for that.

Guest posting is effective. If done well, it can help you to build your image as an expert in your field and present yourself to a wider, highly targeted audience. It can also help you to discover new business opportunities and build meaningful relationships. It gives you control over how you are presented on the web, a hugely important thing from a branding point of view. Not to mention that it also doesn’t take much time to bear fruit.

However, guest posting is not an easy (or quick) way to build links. You have to produce great content, build genuine relationships with other bloggers, be relevant to your audience, provide meaningful advice and more.

Guest posting is also very easy to get wrong. As a technique, it might be a very high end, however, the success or failure of your efforts greatly relate to the execution.

And by that I mean not only what you post but...

Quote:
As someone who is involved in blogging and all things related to it, you probably come across a lot of information from various sources. As with virtually everything related to the Web, there are a lot of misconceptions out there surrounding blogs and blogging. There are also plenty of lesser-known bits of information that can affect the performance of your blog and your day-to-day activities as a blogger. I therefore thought it was a good idea to share some of these trade secrets in the hope of clearing up some confusion you may have.

No doubt to it, in time of penguin and panda, guest blogging is performing good and most of the bloggers, webmasters are using this.

It is a little hard to do as well, you need to contact bloggers and if they accept you then you get a link and traffic as well depending on quality and popularity of the blog.

A Hint from Bing If You are Going to Accept Guest Posts

The Bing Webmaster Blog post today is filled with all kinds of helpful hints on improving the content of your site. Here's a bit on Guest Blogging:
Quote:
Guest blogging, over the last few years, has been the go-to source for quality link building, as well as content creation. And yes, guest blogging can play a role in your content creation plan, but be careful not to rely on it too heavily. There is no percentage to share here, but if your site is populated with content from other people, all with links from content they wrote to another (often unrelated) site, you might be in jeopardy of starting to become a non-sales version of an articles website.

Just be sure to be feeding your own work into the mix. And watch those link signals. Being too accepting of “loosely related” bloggers might have you telling us you’re related to things which everyone will have to admit is a stretch. You’re a food blog. A guess post talking about a new melon baller and linking to their sales page starts to look less informative and more advertorial in nature, so to paraphrase a favorite movie, choose wisely.

5 Methods to Put the Guest Back into Guest Blogging

This is a nice find.

Quote:

The release of Google’s latest major algorithm update, Penguin 2.0, has ruffled the feathers of many professional bloggers and SEO experts. Cries have gone up across the Internet complaining of Google’s alleged attack on guest blogging.

Guest blogging has such a successful method for increasing search engine rankings and blog traffic, it’s become a staple of proper SEO and content marketing practices.

It bears the question, how could Google take away the primary tool of every good Whitehat SEO professional?

How To Still Get Full Benefit From Guest Posts (With Google's Blessing)

Do we really want Googles blessing? I don't trust Google half the time. Check out this blog post anyways.

Quote:
Google's vision of the internet is a simple one. It should be chock full of useful and informative content, which is designed to engage with the reader and preferably, be the kind of content that people want to share.

Google doesn't want to get away from guest posting, they just want to make sure it's done properly. Care should be taken to preserve reputation and build thought leadership with a good mix of content of all types.

7 Ways to Attract A-List Guest Authors to Your Site

Guest blogging is not that dead, check out this blog post if you looking to attract quality writers.

Quote:
If you don’t have one of the more authoritative websites in your niche (yet), it can seem difficult to grab the attention of the great writers in your industry, let alone get them to contribute content. Most of what we would call “A-list” writers are incredibly selective on where they publish their content, which is usually for two reasons..
