Can spammers leave signals to a spam bot in comments?

I got a comment yesterday that had strange symbols in it and I was wondering if it was a way of signaling spam bots. Ie if I allowed the comment it would tell spam bots that it was an easy site to comment on.

The comment itself seemed to relate to the post albeit very poorly written. I also thought it odd that the web link was just a series of letters that led nowhere.

Am I being paranoid or can they signal to spam bots through links and symbols in comments?

I am not sure about it, but...

generally everything is possible.

For example a username could be "seen" by a bot and this could be a signal itself.

I am sure those techniques exist.

If it is a WP blog there are several possibilities to prevent spam.
For example a comment form with some hidden fields or whatever.

I would delete this comment or at least edit it.

It could be either a bot of someone from another country using there language in which is not supported by your browser. Like CSM mentioned, use plugins that WP has to prevent bot's and spammers from commenting.

Lot's of options to play around with in the userpanel. If other blogs have this installed i don't have to register on there blog to make a comment. lol
