Have You Disabled NoFollow Attribute For Comments?

Attention Bloggers: Have you disabled the default nofollow attribute for comments on your blog? If not, why not? If someone is taking the time to leave a quality comment on your blog, why wouldn't you want them to receive a link back to their site? Wondering if there is a good article out there on this topic or if I need to write one....

In my past experiences, removing the nofollow attribute resulted in a ton more spam.

For my current blog I am still undecided whether I want to remove it or not, so will have to update later into this thread if I do decide to go ahead and remove it.

Personally, it shouldn't just be about giving a backlink in return. They should be happy that their site still shows regardless of nofollow or not.

Some bloggers feel it is a nice way to say thank you to the people that invest their time in leaving comments on their blog.

While I do agree and support this, you have to consider the possible risks that may outweigh the good.

It's a tough decision some blog owners have to make...

Keep nofollow attribute attached or remove it and run the risk of an increase of spammers?

But it all falls down to personal preference, and the never ending battle of one choice to another. After all, both nofollow and non-nofollow get spammed, some more than the other and vice versa.

My current way of saying thank you to people who leave good comments, is CommentLuv. While still nofollow attributed, it's a good way to give the person free exposure of their latest post.

I've removed the nofollow attribute and have had very few human spam comments that were held in moderation. Ditched Akismet and now using Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin and I'm getting none of the automated crap that got by Akismet that I had to delete manually. There's also a plugin to validate trackbacks - Topsy Blocker if you want to have that feature enabled.

Haven't noticed a problem with spammers, but then again, I'm just running a low traffic blog more for myself than anyone else.

I am using the Disqus comment plugin and don't think i removed the nofollow attribute. I dunno if one of my plugins is doing this though. As long as the commenter don't post there own website in the blog comment i approve it. There is a field to insert there website URL anyways.

I would like quality blog comments and will give them some loven.

some of my blogs are nofollow in comment and others are dofollow but I still moderate the comment before I post it.

The only issue I've seen with keeping nofollow is the simple fact that your blog tends to get loaded up with comment spam in an attempt to get links back to the commentator's site.

It happens to my company blog ALL the time. I'll get hundreds of comments to moderate sometimes. It's insane. I finally just turned nofollow on so people would stop.

I am not making my blog comments no follow and I keep the opportunity for the quality blog commenters but still all comments need moderation to ensure there are no spam comments.

I did something interesting with a (now defunct) blog some time ago. My site linked to a comments page using no-follow, yet all the links within this comments page were follow. So, if just one follow link got to this page, all the links would be valid follow links.

I never checked whether that happened.

I understand the hesitation - you often see lists of high PR dofollow blogs around. I don't want to be on those lists because I don't need those kinds of comments.

Most of my commenters (at least on my popular blog) don't have a website - the ones that do can get some traffic instead of a backlink. Still not a bad deal for them I guess. But I use Movabletype and have no idea if it's set to follow or nofollow so maybe they get the backlink too?

Edit - I'm going to go get a "free" link by commenting on Cricket's blog!

Be careful, By default comments are dofollow , And its not injustice if we don't provide dofollow links to useless comments even i made comments nofollow on every post in my blog.

I use no follow attribute for my blog, otherwise i will get more spam. Many commenter comment only to get back links only.
