have you noticed... (another adsense...)
Have you noticed that adsense ads on Blogs are almost always about blogs? I mean regardless of the content of the blog, it's always blog ads.
I need to do that filter thing and get rid of that. It's completely pointless (almost) on my blogs as they are all niche blogs that should be advertising other products (dogs, sitcoms, tech products, etc)

Hmm, perhaps you are not hitting enough key words. I don't seem to have that problem with the adsense on my blog. Also, I think placement could have a lot to do with it too, such as in a header or side bar, rather than in an item page.
Just an idear, but the ads on the item pages always have to do with the content. It does not just default to blog ads.
Another possibility is that blog ads just happen to be the highest paid keyword for the your page.

I know, I was just getting frustrated that it was finding "blog" most dominant. but I'll put forth a special effort now to key in on different words and see what happens.

Actually, that is true. I just went and checked a few blogs with Adsense and most of the ads were about blogging, even when the content wasn't.

My blog doesn't have any blog keywords in the Adsense. When I am talking about blogs though it does appear. If you only have a few lines of text for each blog entry it's probably not enough to pick up targeted ads

I had to really work it hard using keywords that i KNEW had adsense ads, but I managed to get one to pop up with ads not related to blogs. Although yesterdays was like adding insult to injury... after I posted without any mention of blogs at all I got this for google ad results:

Ads by Google: Blog | Blog Forum | Online Blog | Blog Design

geesh, it's almost like they did that on purpose, lol

What you want to use is "Section Targeting".
Google allows you to specify which portions of your page should get more weight or consideration when they are choosing ads for display. That doesnt mean the rest of the page gets ignored, just that the section you 'target' gets higher consideration.
I was just looking at this myself (I'm reading Joel Comm's Adsense Secrets book) and considering how much work it was going to take to put this in place (across all of my sites)... but it looks like it's well worth testing! Of course, it'll be easier in a blog as you can just edit the individual post pages or sidebar files or whatever.

If Adsense can't give you on-topic ads, I'd take it as a hint that you're not getting your message out strongly enough.

What is "section targeting", is that something in the Adsense control panel? I don't recall seeing it there, but wouldn't mind testing it out.

I tend to think it’s very easy to trigger Blog ads and it can be simply down to the use of using the word Blog.
My personal opinion is that Google are giving Blogs top priority for Blog Ads because they need to serve all Adword customers who are simply advertising Blogs or services. One way to make sure their customer base is covered is to have that trigger in place which is why many see the Blog Ads.
Colleen, you would use tags for the section targeting - see Google

You can find the specifics from Google here: What is section targeting and how do I implement it?
I didnt originally find it in my account either - I just did a search for it from within my account (the Help link at the top right) after reading about it in Joel Comm's book.

thanks Lynn that's great info. I've found that mentioning "blog" only once would destroy the potential of other ads no matter what I said or how many times I said it! LOL. but this looks like it has potential, I'll give it a shot tonight.

Cool - I'm going to try it out on my Wordpress blog, myself. It did say that it may take a couple of weeks to take effect... but I believe that has to do with how often your site is crawled. If you update often, and get a couple of new quality inbound links from high traffic sites after you make those changes, I imagine it would happen quicker

Wow, that's the first I've heard about that section targeting and adsense. Hell, I just always assumed it was doing it's job, staying pretty much on target. I would say that it's far and few between that I've run into an issue of irrelevant ads showing though. Nevertheless, thanks for the great info.

maybe, but I did one blog post where I focused purely on tv shows coming out on dvd... I was very careful and did major keyword stuffing I also put the adsense below the break, and the ads that popped up were good ones for a change, so perhaps this will work quickly.
