I did something for my Society at uni.
http://www.brishksoc.com
It assumes a blog style but that will change later.
It all really depends on what you want to do. If you want to put a few photos as gallery, have a news section, and some static pages, then wordpress would be the way to go. Otherwise, you can try looking at some of the other ones out there. I would go for Drupal, but then that's just personal preference.

I use Wordpress for a lot of sites as CMS. It's perfect for a basic(!) CMS. I also use a bridge to vbulletin so it's sharing the same userbase, works flawless!

Do you expect to manage the content, be able to insert blocks of content at pre-defined places? Andreas are you doing that with wordpress?
san-deep maybe look at joomla. I'm loving it.

Yes, it's a brillant blogging tool, but I wouldn't call it a CMS.
A CMS should symbolically identify content so that it can be moved from place to place through the admin back end.

I don't usually reorganize things after creating them, but if I understand you, this is easily done with Wordpress. Let's say I hvae an article in the dating category, but I want to move it to the marriage category. Or put it in both categories. Either way, we're talking about a very very simple process. I would say that moving content around is well-handled using Wordpress. I mean if you checkout my date culture site, it's no blog but Wordpress takes care of everything.

I think Wordpress would make a decent very basic CMS, but for more complex stuff I'd recommend Drupal. I think its far superior to Joomla or anything else out there as far as what you can do with it.

I’ve been wondering for some time now if it would be possible to use the “create new page function” on WordPress to build a site. Instead of the main page being a blog it would be a “static” page like a normal site the only difference would be that it used WP to create the pages.

indeed. I spent 2 weeks doing nothing but getting a feel for it. I built one web site with every possible combination of blog/section/table/category/content/url etc menu types just to see what would happen.

I was afraid I was being hasty.
What's superior about it?

yes yes yes you're right, wordpress has categories. I think it's one of the reasons it's superior to blogger.
Joomla is setup like this:
section 1, category 1, story 1
section 1, category 1, story 2
section 1, category 2, story 1
you can see where this is going
One level of category is perfect for a blog, but section/category/story is not enough for a web site.

I have a static frontpage on dateculture.com. Then on las-vegas-nv-online.com I have the top of the front page static and the bottom a blog.

Honestly, I'm not sure why you would want to go deeper than category - subcategory (which is what I do on my Wordpress blogs and sites. They way you ahve it set up, 1 click to get to section 1, 2nd click gets you to category 1 or 2, 3rd click gets you to story 1 or 2.
Go any deeper and you're breaking the old web design rule about not having stuff more than 3 clicks away from the homepage.
I can see Wordpress being inadequate for a huge site, but for a small to medium sized contnet site, category - subcategory - article has always been enough for me.

What you did with datingculture.com is exactly what I was thinking but instead of having a blog time site with comments and stuff I would just want WP to create a bunch of static pages. Every time I wanted to add more content I would just create another page and that’s it. In my opinion this could be very handy because people would be able to create an entire site in minutes.

I'm sure you could turn off comments, but I would consider keeping them. They get users engaged with your site and keeps them coming back.
