You need Akismet which comes default in Wordpress, you just need to activate by creating account on official website of Akismet, it helps fight with spammers.

I've tried several different anti-spam plugins to stop the trash being allowed in the queue for posting comments, but for me the best one I'm sticking with is called Anti-spam.

Wordfence Security is a free enterprise class security plugin that includes a firewall, virus scanning, real-time traffic with geolocation and more. I really a powerful plugin and a must for your WordPress site.

Another 'must' plugin that came to my attention, and one that I should really have installed before now, is Better WP Security. It's frightening to see what vulnerabilities there are on your blog.

Sitemaps don't help you out in SEO whatsoever.

You won't get any SEO help if you have 2 SEO plugins installed.

From Sitemaps.org (run by Google, Microsoft (a.k.a. Bing) and Yahoo!

Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support Sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata. Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.
i.e. If you have terrible internal linking a Sitemap might help the search engines find your lonely pages if you do the Sitemap properly.

It would be better to have better site structure and internal linking so everyone (human and the bots that don't support the Sitemap protocol) can get around your site or blog. Oh, and a site map. (Note the different spelling)

I would suggest these:

1. Wordfence (for security)
2. SEO plugin by Yoast (for SEO)
3. W3 Total cache (for speed)
4. Facebook comments, Facebook like box, Simple social buttons (for social media)

I have my own set of plugins as well i recommend to all my followers on my site... here are they, my must have WordPress Plugins...

1) Yoast Seo -- Seo plugin as well Google sitemap Alternative
2) All In One WP Security & Firewall Plugin -- If you are concern about security of your blog this will do the job.
3) W3 Total Cache -- To clear the cache and get my site a bit speed boost.
4) CommentLuv Premium Plugin -- I dont trust on Akismet to filter the spam comment, Facebook and Gogle commenting system is a crap... they dont need a moderation...so commenters can post any links what they want..., commentluv is the best...
5) Contact form 7 -- another free goodie, for creating any type of contact form in a minutes.
6) Floating social Share bar : a floating social bar for my post.

This are my must have plugins if i ever think of starting any blog...

So you wouldn't add any SEO plugins or anything? Did you even read any replies in this thread?

It's been so long I can't remember using the resident WP editor. Having said that, I really like using WP Editor. Along with using Firebug (for FF), it makes finding and editing the right file, and respective code pretty easy.

Bulletproof (for security) was suggested to me recently. I've installed it, but not really taken the time to properly test and configure it.
