New to Blogging
I am so VERY new to this blogging idea. I think it would benefit my website especially as we are growing. BUT where do I get one? I saw something from Google called Blogger or something.
So...can someone give me a good kick in the right direction. I don't mind research but I'm not sure where to even start and is it better to have it hosted on my website vs. using one from Google, etc.?
Thanks so much!

if you are new and don't want to spend money there are free blogging options out there -- before you spend money on a host check them out

If you're thinking about starting a blog for this site:
http://www.connectinguscities.com/
Then I'd say don't do it if your primary goal from it is to increase sales/visitors to your site. Your target audience would likely not care about your blog since they'd be too busy looking at hotties. But of course if you want to start it just for the heck of it, then by all means do it. What do other people say?

Word press
I am probably just a couple steps ahead of you so let me share with you what I have learned.
Blogger is a pain in the but. Its free but that usually means something. The one thing I do like is that someone MAY stumble accross your blog by using the "next" button. I would never put my heart and soul on there though.
If this is more than a fling, I would go wordpress hosted on your own site. go download it at the link that JohnScott put up and then upload to your host. The cool thing about WP instead of oldschool pages is there is no more manually doing metatags and titles and blah...blah.
As well, you get trackbacks, and all kinds of plugins that other really smart people create for you! These all combined make for some pretty cool advancements over doing each page by hand.

The hottie girl on the website or on the web in general? LOL
Basically I was thinking of a blog for others to contribute regarding community information, travel, family, etc. But I'm so new at this stuff that I'm not even near ready to launch it.
Thanks everyone for the tips. I did upload WordPress and have been playing around with it but want to feel comfortable before just throwing it out there and getting burned with my lack of knowledge.
I think I've said before on this forum somewhere that I'm not much of a writer. So I would definitely need others contributing.

host it yourself.
if you use blogger, you can host it, but you still depend on their site to be up to get to edit/update your blog.

Hey, folks:
Why do I see everyone here pimping WordPress? I've gotta get two blogs live shortly, and I'm going with MoveableType. I like the way it looks better out of the box, it's highly extensible, some people I respect a lot use it ... what do you know that I don't?

Hi Binky,
I think many people are recommending Wordpress because it offers so much more potential than using Blogger. If you start off using WP, you will be better off once you decide you want to try different things with your site.
As for the look, the MT themes may look better than Kubrick, but the WP community has developed a ton of themes that you can use. Check out themes.wordpress.net for a preview.
And Suzjor, welcome to blogging! You'll probably find it to be a lot of fun. If you decide to go with Wordpress, many hosts have a quick way of installing this via Fantastico or Plesk or similar tool. You should be up and running in under 2 minutes.

more then anything, I think it's personal preference after trying other blogging software. It doesn't mean it's the best for everyone, but overall a noob could install WP and advance from easy to very advanced all in the same software. It fits all types of users.
