I know there is a way to show just a snippet of your post on the main page and click to the whole thing but I can't find it in the admin. is it a plug in or what am I missing? please forgive this noob question

huh? instead of showing the whole post, I wanna snippet only and then visitor can click to get whole thing. I used to know how to do this and I feel really retarded that I can't figure it out again.
