Using blogs as a first step for online marketing

Is this a good idea for my less than experienced affiliates? I typically suggest that they create a blog to get their feet wet and hopefully they'll be inspired from there. I set up a tutorial for how to set up a free blog on blogger and see how they do.

My idea is basically that they'll have something online that they can look at and know that incoming clicks are real people and they can then promote that at the very least.

Thoughts?

Makes sense, but you need to tell them what to do with their blogs, too.

Blogging is hard work, and keeping quality content and having affiliate products may be hard to compromise with, really.

Depends, I guess.

very good, but have a blog on the same domain as your site, exchange rolls with related blogs and update frequently

We all know that blogging, just like anything else related to online marketing is hard work. None of it is easy. But people who don't know about online marketing tend to think it's all very simple.

My hope is that this is a good first step for them to take to at least get something up and then see if it's something they'd like to sink their teeth into. Obviously with 90% of them it never gets past the sign up stage. That's the nature of the beast with affiliate programs.

I think its an excellent addition to many of the "First Steps" necessary to run a successful site or ecommerce business, but its not exactly what i would recommend as the only thing my clients needed to do to get their feet wet.
