Is Blogspot good for serious and long term blogging?
I want to make a good blog and wanted few things before going for one. My Requirements and limitations
1) I can't manage scripts and coding but can do small tweaking.
2) I do not have my own server so want a free hosting service.
Keeping this is mind I got few suggestion from this forum and other forums. I also had a talk with few of my friends almost everyone advised me for blogspot as I do no have my own server. But today I read another thread in hedir and I quote
Quote:
This is a part of study where I am almost certain that blogger.com will die soon. What is last time you have seen a famous blog with blogspot? I have not seen a good SEO or tech blog with blogspot for quite some time.
Technical field can be different as most of them know how to manage their own domain. What about other fields? Do you think chances of making a good blog is lesser if it is hosted with blogspot due to lack of integrations and community involvement.
|
Do you think creating a blog with blogspot.com is not a good idea for long term.
Thanks for all the help, I am learning many things from these threads.

You can set up a blogspot blog now and later when you have hosting and domain, install your own wordpress and import your blogspot blog.
I think wordpress supports importing from blogspot. Don't remember exactly.
Although you will loose back links that your blog might have built while on blogspot...

I have a lot of different blogs and one happens to be on blogspot. The rest are wordpress on my own host. However, As far as long term goes.. I can say that with the blogspot account i have, it was my first blog. It was a blog for a comapny, and it does exceptionally well and it is also listed in Google finance for that company profile. In my personal opinion, I think that Wordpress is hands down way better, and placing it on your own host does make it look more professional, BUT I do not think it makes a difference where you host it as long as you frequently update the blog with content.

If you are new to blogging and just want to "test the waters", then one of those free blogging hosts (ie; blogger) would work just fine.
However, if you're looking to establish a long-term blog, one that you might wish to monetize at some later time .. then do yourself a favor and get a regular hosting account and install some blogging software such as wordpress.
The free hosts like blogger can take your blog at any time for any reason. Then you have to start all over.

If you want to be taken seriously, definitely no. But if you're just testing it out, then I guess it's worth a try. But honestly, if you want to make a name for yourself....the freebie route is NOT the way to go. If you're just writing a blog to.. I dunno.. be read by friends and family, then I suppose hosted blogging like Blogger or Wordpress is sufficient.

I have to disagree with some things here. I guess I should have been more specific. I have a blospot address, it is a blog for a company. The blog is indexed and does quite well organically. It has a PR 5, receive many BL's, and is also listed in Google Finanjce for that company. While I do beleive that blogspot is basic, i will stand behind what I said, it does not matter if you host it on a free host as long as you receive back links, and content is added regularly.

And if they decide suddenly "lose" your account tomorrow? Free accounts are in not in your control, and quite honestly I would be concerned about a professional company needing to use free hosting services for their blog.

There are many companies that use it for company purposes. They could "lose" that account, but I would imagine that applies to MFA and spammers.
I do not beleive that anyone would delete a clean blog just for the sake of it.
Don't get me wrong, I have several blogs for different things, all I am trying to say is that if you think having a blog on blogspot is a long term negative, I do not agree as it has been a long term positive for me. I guess it depends on what your blog is trying to do, if its to make money, maybe blogspot is not the place, but for me, it does exactly what it was intended to do and that is get ranked, and get visitors. Just because something is free does not always mean its cheap.

A business that has their blog hosted on blogger, IMO... is not professional in the slightest. That's like me hosting my company website on Geocities. Of course you can still get links and rankings, but I imagine the person who spends the few dollars it takes to host it themselves will fare much better in the end.
