I've had several sites, many built from scratch, some bought over the counter, some bought as existing sites.
What I'm about to do is very different for me. I wanna do a blog. Specifically in an area of my expertise. I've been banging my head daily trying to choose a site I have in stock and none seem to fit right for the template. Then I hit a few blogs, just reading and realized a blog would rock. Easily managable content, I can jump in, add my content on the fly, a few pics, bam.
The whole point for this post is to ask which blog I should use. I'd like to keep it simple, want the best for seo of course. Something up to date. I'd like to spend most of my time writing the content, I'll of course like to have some navigation for special pages, links and maybe a directory to some related sites. I've spent very little time blogging so I'm not intune with whats going on with blogs.
downloaded, i read the install notes, and now uploading. Soon as dns propogates Ill run my install.
Thanks IslaScotts.
Question for you, or anyone: Should I just run this as-is or can you suggest any good ideas to start on right away. The topic of the blog is my profession of 15 years in a popular construction trade, a very live industry. My intent is to help people with choices in what can be a 5,000$-100,000$ investment in their home. The topic is well searched in all SE. I can emphasize navigation is my most important issue. Each article (entry) I write will be very consise/informative and helpfull in making decisions for the visitors. So I have to wonder if 'todays' entry should be a main page deal and yesterdays entry/s will move down the line and still be accessible.
Another part of the site will be some usefull software I may buy or have built in one language or another to help in design and practicality/functionality which of course will be quick links from the main page and linked from my network of ghost sites (as i call them).
Find a good template, or have one built. (just google WordPress template)
Get some plugins. Here's a good list.
Look for other similar topic blogs, comment (DO NOT SPAM) on their posts. Post a little about that blog, with trackback.
OK time for other people to put in their suggestions.
That is why I suggested wordpress.org, it allows you to customize a lot and they have a ton of plug ins. I wouldn't have any more advice then to look up customizing wordpress or wordpress templates.
I spent the last 5 hours working on wordpress for my blog. I gotta say I made alot of progress in that time, learning the way was quite simple. I'm still finding trouble in choosing font size and type in my added pages but should run into a solution soon. I'll be reading the threads here alot to fine tune myself.
This is the first time I've made a site/blog in what happens to be my specialty. It's refreshing to be able to write entire pages of content on the fly. For my other sites I've had to research for hours only to come up with mediocre content. I'm going to enjoy this one, and it happens to be a very popular search criteria.
Thanks IslaScotts and MadEvan for your input. Any other input for a beggining blogger would be valued and appreciated.

Kevin.
I recommend using a font that can be found on all computers. You can find a list of them here.
Be sure to pick one for Windows and one for Mac.

Yes, Already started the first one. I have alot to talk about in this blog but my article writing skills are lacking for the moment so I've bought a technical writing book to get myself all limbered up. Soon as it's rolling I'll toss it in my sig.
I hand regged the domain also, gets me into the seo frame of mind and lets me experiment a little.
