Tranfering content from Wordpress.com to .org

Has any one ever done this?
I know there is an option to import content into your hosted wordpress.org blog from another blog: Live Journal, Wordpress.com, Blogger, ect.
My question is, has anyone ever done it? and how involved is it? and so you lose any content in doing so, or integrety of the pages?

I am trying to see if I need to stop updating, and building content now, or will I have a smooth transaction when I find the domain I want to use and host it myself.
What has worked best for you when going from free hosted, to a self hosted with the same blog.
Thanks in advance.

You should be able to use the import function. In your dashboard, select the manage tab and then import. You may have to first export the information from your old blog.

You can import from WordPress.com via a WordPress export file. In your WordPress.com dashboard there should be an option to export your posts and then just upload it via the import function on your privately hosted blog as Cricket pointed out.

Thanks for the tips. It just makes me nervous, I was just wondering if anyone had done it, and were there any problems, did you lose any content, or anything.
I will give it a shot.

To date, I haven't done a WP to WP transfer. I did a B2Evolution to WP transfer. Because at the time WP was not set up to transfer from a B2Evo blog I had to transfer post via an XML file. The posts transferred fine but I lost the comments only because I had to transfer them to a seperate XML file and they would have transferred as posts not comments.

But that was from one blogging platform to another. I'm sure it will go a lot smoother because you are transferring from WP to WP. To be safe though don't do anything with your WP.com blog until after you make sure everything has gone smoothly. Good luck
