Blog theme sponsored links

At best, theme authors claiming you can’t remove the link are ignoring or ignorant of the license issues, at worst they’re actively exploiting the work of thousands of volunteers that have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into WordPress.

I think that snippet says it all really - from the horses mouth, i.e. Matt Mullenweg.

I've removed the sponsored links but I have contacted the theme designer, with no response yet.

That just shows that your too cheap to spend money on your own design, with the rights to remove it. Keep telling yourself whatever you need to.

Here's what I don't get though. I got a theme that was sponsored, but the theme author said that you could edit the theme. No mention was made as to having to leave the sponsor links or anything.

Sooo, since I removed them is there anything I've done wrong?

It would seem to me that a sense of Wrong is objective. The question you should be asking is "If I paid, as an investment, to have my sponsored link placed on a theme, would I want someone arbitrarily removing it?"

I would also want to make sure that the theme I paid to get a link in was smart enough to say that the footer links have to be left intact, or something similar.

Come on, now your just taking it a bit far and playing with semantics.

Your entitled to your opinion, but I have paid for blog designs, but I disagree with 4 text links on the footer.

That's fine that you disagree, but that still doesn't give you the right. I agree it looks terrible to have that many links anywhere on a theme, but you are still going against the original designers wishes, that's cheap and trashy (just my opinion). I personally would be embarrassed to admit that I removed the links just because i wouldn't buy my own theme. That's called a leecher.

That's a simple fix, don't give people permission to edit the theme. If you leave the option open, you can't whine about it if the links disappear.
