Blog Sitemaps and Wordpress

Hi,

I have read a few posts about adding a sitemap to a blog.

#1: Is it worth it?
#2: Once I create it where do I put it ( on the server? as a post? as a page?)

I use wordpress as a platform so if anyone has created one, let me know how it worked out!

Thanks

i think it's very worth it. Anything that will help bring you traffic with little effort is better than no traffic at all. There is in fact a Google sitemap Plugin for WP blogs that makes setting up sitemaps a lot easier.

Hi,

There is a Wordpress plugin for creating Google sitemaps over here. It is one of the two plugins that I think is absolutely necessary. The other one is Akismet. Follow the directions. You can create a similar sitemap for Yahoo. There are other plugins for sitemaps that you can use, but I don't use them because the category is enough for my site.

Rich

It is absolutely worth it. I mean you have nothing to lose with the plugin that Rich posted.

Feel free to read more about why Google recommends using sitemaps.

I think it's worth creating a sitemap for navigation purposes as well. It's not very difficult and allows for easy, fast navigation of your site's most important locations from a single point.

Take a look at mine: http://www.modernflat.com/sitemap/

I use wordpress and creating this sitemap (it's a PAGE, not a post) took all of 5 minutes. There isn't much to it... just a call to grab the PAGES, CATEGORIES, ARCHIVES. Created 3 lists, floated them one beside the other... done!

off-topic:

How did you create the pages, about? did you create a folder named, 'about' and put an index page?

For those who'll read this thread later and wonder what Providence did to answer his own question, here is how you do it.
  • Login to your WP admin
  • Click on Write Page
  • Click on Page
  • Give your page a title (eg. About Me)
  • Fill in content (of course )
  • *optional* update post slug (eg. about) - this will result in: http://url/about/
  • Then just click Publish
That is the shortened version - there are many more options and steps you can do, but for those reading this and not knowing how to do it there you go.
