By the way, is it true that its not ideal for new internet sites (sites that are <2 years) to have many visitors? Apparently I read somewhere that Google will check the number of years the site is registered, and that will affect the ranking of the site..

Glad to help! Yes, Google has many aging factors, including domain age. New sites can overcome these by building strong inbound links, but even so, new sites have a tougher time ranking than older sites. It's not impossible, but it's just more difficult. Jim Boykin, one of the top SEO experts, won't even take on a client if their site is younger than two years old.

Yup I did see the comment posted by Jim Boykin on his SEO website. Must say I was quite shocked when I first read that line but when I went on to read his blog, his explanation did make some sense, though I wouldn't totally agree. But let's leave that out of the discussion here.
So can I pursue this discussion alittle further and ask how to build strong inbound links? How will you or a SEO define strong?
I mean, aside from having strong content, and content that are unique and useful (which we've discussed earlier) and asking ppl for link exchanges, how else can we have strong inbound links?

Choose a niche which you have passion for, apt knowledge on, or have the resources from which you can get more ideas or info to share in your blog.
Hope that helps buddy

Thanks for the replies!
Definitely agree that content is important, and with a strong, unique and useful content, users will be coming back to read the blog. Keeping the readers in mind is important.

I agree, if we blog for advertisers, after a while, we run out of steam. It has to be interest or passion to keep ourselves in the long haul.

Improve technorati ranking by focusing on your niche, bloggers will always add you to their blog roll if you’re blog is related to their niche. Be active on other peoples sites by leaving posts on their site. Do a link exchange program on your blog by clicking on a person favour to Technorati button within there blog and the author will then return the favour back after.

Wow, I can't believe no one mentioned submitting to blog carnivals through blogcarnival.com! Its instant technorati rank. Just write posts about the kind of content the carnivals look for and your gloden. I get 70-100 linkbacks a month that way.
To retain traffic you need to have a service that entices people to sign up for using their email. Then you send out a news letter with your blog posts in it. Feedburner has a get posts by email signup you can put on your site thats great for that.
Of course the other great way is to submit to social bookmark sites like Digg, Reddit, Danogo, Delicious, etc. You'll get indexed by google and increase your page rank.

By strong inbound links, I'm referring to the quantity and quality. Obviously, more links the better. Each link will have more value if it's from a relevant site. For relevance, it's important to understand the concept of topical neighborhoods. I won't get too far into it here, but if your site is about baseball products and other sites that are also about baseball products link to yours, search engines will determine that your site has increased relevance for baseball products. This is in addition to the anchor text that they link to you with. It's not bad to get links from sites that aren't relevant, but they don't add as much value and it's most effective to have the majority of your inbound links come from relevant sites. Take any link you can get, but focus your efforts on acquiring links that have the highest relevance.
Regarding link exchanges, avoid them as they can really hurt you. Using them for SEO is against Google's guidelines and they've made examples of many sites in the real estate industry. One-way inbound links are the key.
If you want a great guide on link building, check out SEOmoz's The Professional's Guide to Link Building.
Hope that helps!

blogcarnival seems to be a great idea. I have yet to check it out but you must have done something correctly to get around 70-100 linkbacks per month.
