How to - Retain traffic? Improve technorati ranking?
There've been very useful resources in this blog which talks about increasing traffic - largely from the ping services and link exchanges.
A thought that arose in the mindst of reading these posts was - how can we, as bloggers, retain our visitors (i.e. ensure visitors will return to our blog)?
On a side note, we've signed up with technorati not too long ago and am still wondering what does "authority" mean? What are some ways in improving the technorati ranking?

I attended Blog Orlando last year. During one of the sessions I asked the speaker how I could improve my Technorati authority. His reply was that I needed other blogs that are listed in Technorati to link to me. This will help build your rank.
In order to retain readers, the best way is to have good content. Go to other blogs that are similar to yours and ask to exchange links. You can comment on similar blogs and add to the "conversation" in order to gain new readers as well.

Thanks alot for the reply. Have to agree that content is king. If content is good, people will be coming back for more.
About Technorati, do you happen to know how to get others to link up to you?

Trendinsights,
Here are my thoughts on getting other sites to link to you:
Ask bloggers with similar sites to exchange links with you on your blog roll.
Create a controversial or link bait post that will draw attention to you.
Leave comments on blogs. Do not spam, just add to the conversation.
If you go on Blog Catalog, there are always people willing to "favorite" you in their boards.
I hope this helps you gain "authority" over at Technorati.

Nice to have you here. Well, with regards to whether Technorati works, I am in no position to comment. I'm just a newbie, and am looking at ways to promote the blog.
From what I know, Technorati is like any pinging services available in the net. What it does is "advertising" your latest posts, which hopefully, has a topic and content interesting enough to attract readers.
Attracting readers, in turn, translate into higher traffic. And with a good content, these readers will be looking to return to your site.
Well, maybe in the future I can let you know if Technorati works.

@ corlock
Thanks for that link! Really informative..
A little problem I have with digg though, it seems that I can't register. Whenever I click on the register button, the homepage simply refreshes. Anyone any ideas?
Appreciated!

On reataining traffic to your blog, I would suggest working on providing helpful, unique and relevant content would help you a lot Also keeping it updated so that your users will always have new stuff to read.

Other than building links, submitting to directories, rss submissions, submitting to social bokkmarks to increase traffic it is also most important to frequently add some fresh and useful content to its users and having an option for newsletter subscription is also a good idea to retain visitors.....

Totally agree that content is king. Nothing beats having content that's interesting, unique and/or offering differing perspectives (as long as there're no death threats) .
Just curious, what're some of the sources, if you do use, to get ideas for your content?

One of the most effective ways to bring traffic is to create tools or resources that can help people, and then use social media sites to get people there. Another effective way is to be an active member of communities on other sites. Be a regular commenter on a blog you like, and really add something to the conversation. People will read your comments and visit your site. I've made many new friends and drawn links (which lead to rankings and traffic) this way. Be an active poster in a forum you like (like V7N!) and definitely take advantage of signature links and profile page links etc. (These help more from the point of view of drawing traffic than SEO, but every bit helps.) If people like what you have to say, they will visit your site often. There are ton of other ways, but you have to basically think on the lines of relational networking.
To get people to keep coming back, producing quality blog content and providing feeds that people can subscribe to is a very important method. Building a community through forums or other methods can help too. the key thing is to create great content. Think out of the box..it doesn't have to be just text...it can be tools, quizzes, pdf's, references, gadgets, whatever. If you you know of a particular problem that some group, community profession faces, and you can provide a useful solution, that can become valuable content and possibly linkbait.
Regarding improving Technorati Authority, you have to get blog sites to link to you. All of your other traffic building methods will help this especially if you are targeting blogs. You might be interested in this little tip for increasing your Technorati authority.

Yes, it can increase your visibility in the blogosphere, and the more people link to your site, the more Technorati can send traffic your way. People visit Technorati to see what's hot, and they do searches. If your site has a decent amount of links to it, then you'll get more visibility in searches, and more traffic.

Excellent advice. Been reading your blog and realise there're tons of information there.. Really appreciate your help here.
By the way, is it true that its not ideal for new internet sites (sites that are <2 years) to have many visitors? Apparently I read somewhere that Google will check the number of years the site is registered, and that will affect the ranking of the site..

Definitely fresh and unique content can help you retain your visitors. If the vistors found that they can get some good thoughts on your blogs then there is a big possibility that they will visit again.

Yes, that's right... That's the best and ethical way to retain your visitors. By providing them with some useful resources and interested articles, it's for sure that they will come back again to visit your blog....

A very important factor in blogging is niche selection
The reason for this is to be able to share more useful info. Don't just go blogging about something just so you read that a lot of person became successful or made big $$$. I personally believe that you blog for your readers and not for potential advertisers
Choose a niche which you have passion for, apt knowledge on, or have the resources from which you can get more ideas or info to share in your blog.
Hope that helps buddy

Indeed........."content is always king" If your content is really good then users will love it and bookmark your site or link it to their site or blog and they will sure come back time to time.....
