As for me, If you want your blog to be more attractive, I can recommend you DivvaFlip.

DivvaFlip will transform your photo gallery in a flipping book. It's very beautiful and funny.
You can make also great catalogues.

I just use Askimet really. I bought a blog with TONES of them. It's alright but I'm not a huge fan; I guess I"m a purist.

There are alot that seem to create page chaos, the worst ones I see are the ones with the little images of who is visiting, I have only seen these implemented well on one or two sites.

Now I have developed & using one more plug-in, which is "related post" plug-in, Using this we can put different anchor text for each post from different posts.

my advice is to get free web hosting domains and test your wordpress blogs there with these plug ins, cause it can surely mess up the real site of yours when you don't know what're you doing, the big score is always to test and test and test and see if it really works, what more good use of all the free web hosting company out there but as guinea pigs

I am going to try all in one SEO based on everyone's response here. I only use the default ones so far and often wonder if that leaves me open to hacking or comment spam.

Slightly off topic, but can anyone tell me how important is it to stay up-to-date with the latest version of wordpress?

Very important! I haven't seen an update yet that hasn't fixed a security issue or equally important bug. (Not just WordPress, but Joomla, Drupal, etc...)

I've actually had a site shut down by the hosting company because updates hadn't been applied to fix a vulnerability.
