I read on another forum that Akismet was "the best thing since sliced bread" and since I'm sick of dealing with 250 to 300 pieces of comment spam every time I check my blog, I decided to use it. First thing that confused me was a reference to having to have an API key. I checked my account and didn't see anything that seemed to correspond, downloaded the plugin, put it in the appropriate folder and activated it. No dire warnings popped up and everything seemed okay until the next time I decided to post and to get rid of accumulated comment spam. Now, no matter what I do, I end up on a blank page that says "done" at the bottom left. The only way I've gotten out of that is to use the browser back button. ?????

All I can figure is that the plugin isn't compatible with the old version of WordPress that I'm using (it's a fossil, just like me! I haven't updated from version 1.5.2 because I'm afraid of losing the tiny bit of page rank that has miraculously attached itself to my blog.)

Can anyone help me out here?

You have to create an account here http://wordpress.com/api-keys/ to get your api key Not sure how it works if you are using a dinosaur version of wordpress. The is an automatic update plugin that works great but again, it may not work with an older version of wp. Upgrading to a newer version of wp did nothing to hurt my page rank.

This was an earlier tutorial I did on upgrading my blog http://www.genealogy-computer-tips.c...ordpress-blog/

Now I just use the upgrade plugin. From another old fossil.

Just checked the Akismet plugin info and you do need a newer version of wp for everything to work correctly:

You don't have to do anything to configure Akismet besides entering your API key, just activate and relax. However you do need at least WordPress version 2.0 or above for everything to work. The latest version of the plugin is 2.0.

Once you decide to upgrade your site, you can install the automatic upgrade plugin and then after that it is easy to upgrade both the installation of wp and the plugins.

Thanks for the info, Pat!
I did go and get the API key and entered it in the plugin where it seemed to belong. This was before I saw your second message. The result was that it completely locked everything up. Fortunately, I was able to get in through my FTP client, deleted the plugin and everything is working again. I'll wait until I go back to work tomorrow to mess with it some more. (I have a bunch of stuff printed out on how to back up the database, etc., but it's all at my store.)

I've been using photopress for a year or so and find it quite handy, especially if you use a lot of images.
