Benefits to self hosting blog vs Wordpress/Blogsport?

I wanted to start a new blog and was wondering if there are any benefits to hosting your own blog vs use Wordpress or Blogspot to host it? Do you have the potential to market your blog better with one or the other? Make more cash on advertising on one or the other? Thanks for the advice...

Clearly hosting your own blog gives you more control over your content and how it is presented. Other blogs are more likely to trade with you if your site is owned and legit looking (blogspot sites have been known to come and go).

However in many cases it's easier to get SE rankings on blogspot or other blog hosting companies.

Personally I use a mix of both, making the main blog my own domain and many other blogs with relevant articles pointing to my domain for extra SEO flavor
