My personal recommendation is to choose a domain name and then install WordPress (on your server) as your blogging patform.

Yes, your own domain blog is more profitable in long term basis. But if you still want to have a free blog you can try blogspot.

IMO, if you have no idea what to blog about, no direction, and this is your first time...I would say to "Play around" with a free hosted one, like Blogger, or Wordpress.com to get your "sea legs"...and when you start to figure things out, you will want a self hosted blog on your own domain.(Wordpress.org)
No since in wasting the time and money if you don't even have a game plan.

worpress.com and blogger.com is the easy for the new one who want to have a blog.
You can try to use them with a short time for learning and after that you should buy some domain and hosting for build your own one.

I agree
Purchase a domain and hosting. Download WordPress, upload the script and away you go.

You can also use a free one if you want. But I think there is advantage when you have your own domain.

Just for clarification, if you have your blog hosted on www.wordpress.com, they don't allow you to put ads on it right?
If you have your own domain/host with Wordpress uploaded, you can freely monetize the blog?
Thanks

Well, first think of the topic you want and make sure you have high interest in that topic. When I started blogging, I used google's blogger, if you want you can do that, it's really easy for beginners. And if you want to move to a bigger picture, try wordpress

I think blog hosting that some companies (downtownhost.com) provides for their customers is very good for running your blog. I believe if the server is customized for blogging it makes its running very easy.

One good suggestion is: think of the topic you are going to used. Or whatever topics in mind that you'll love to share. Example: sports, entertainment, seo, or anything. Are you just blogging for your own personal reasons?

A tip here before you start blogging, you should decide why you're blogging. That will help you decide where to blog (which type of host) and how to name your blog.

Echoing others thoughts:
You have to be sincerely interested in whatever topic you are writing on - or your lack of interest (and knowledge) will come through in your posts.
Additionally: Wordpress on your hosted domain is best IMO in the long run. You control the site/information - rather than someone else "owning" the data/content that you put on their domain.
