Coldfusion

I've been looking into Coldfusion alot more lately-it seems to be one of the next big thing. Does anyone know it, use it, or like it?

How would it do in a content management environment?

Thanks!

I really like it.. they've done some function integration that makes it very much like php but easier at the same time. The only issue I see with it right now is that additional cost to have a coldfusion server (windows based in most instances).
I actually started (almost complete) construction accounting system in coldfusion ... tested on local machine. But when I went to find a host for it.. ouch to the pocketbook. I've hence started recoding in php.
If you find a decent cheap host let me know.

Cold Fusion was originally released by Allaire around 1995. It is now owned by Macromedia when they merged with Allaire. Cold Fusion was supposed to be one of the best products available. It just became too expensive to buy. I believe a single server license is around $1,200.00 and the enterprise editon is around $6,000.00. So why pay this when you can get ASP or PHP for free. It's also easier and cheaper to find ASP and PHP developers than it is to find a Cold Fusion or Java developer.

There are still many companies using this products and it has a lot of great functions. I use it myself for one of my clients. Macromdia must be pushing this product to make it seem like it's the next best thing but in reality it's been around a long time.

Would you care to explain how your client uses it? How easy is it to manage?

I can't go into details but it's a site similar to travelocity.com and expedia.com. It's a full travel site where you can book flights, hotels, cars, cruises and travel packages. There isn't anything I cannot do in Cold Fusion that I couldn't do in ASP, Java, PHP or .NET. I am experienced in all these languages and they all do practically the same thing. Some are easier to do than other but in the end they all do the same thing. Some people may have a different opinion on this but I feel it's the knowledge of the programming language and how good you really are.

Some programmers prefer Cold Fusion and ASP and other prefer (mostly readers here) prefer PHP vs. ASP. It's all about the language you learned and feel comfortable with. But IMO it's all the same. Some just cost more than others to host and maintain.

It's a powerful programming language. It's not that much different than ASP, Java, PHP or .NET. It's just another programming language.

Here are some links to some resources.

Very well said imaginemn. It really is about preference of the programmer. I've only worked in php and the small amount of coldfusion mentioned above. They really are very similar in the nature of the language - and do the same thing.

i like it because it's tag based... which as a designer is easier to read and pick up on than php which seems to be dollar signs and other symbols that don't make sense.

It's good they way the made it tag based, it helps non-programmers get into it.
