drupal test site and transfer

I am currently running a website, with a paypal shopping cart. It is done with dreamweaver. My intentions are to convert it to a drupal with ubercart site in the first of the year. ( little busy now)

I would like to spend some time here and there to get familiar with using drupal, setting up the look, and layout before I do the final changeover.

I have a spare website I can do this on. Any recommendations or suggestions on how I could do this? I would like to be able to set up the template on the test site and then just bring it over when I do the main site.
