most of today's download trackers are quite powerful solutions... they mostly offer much more than just displaying the download count.

Personally, I use Schlabo's Download script. It comes with download counters as well as a nice hotlink-prevention which makes it much harder for other webmaster to directly link to your downloads, thus saving you lots of bandwidth.
