AIM Chat
I know there is a php chat program, but I don't want to have to be logged into the chat program to be able to talk to people. Is there a way I can make it go to AIM, without the other person having to have AIM?

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to achieve. One thing that seems obvious to me is that you cannot chat via AIM if you're not logged in, since others need to know where the text comes from, and where to send it to during the conversation. Your login ensures that this is taken care of. It's just like a phone number, or email; you need an identity.

Have you ever seen those instant chat things on websites?
In order to give support, you have to have a special window open. I want to know if I can do the same thing but have it routed through AIM, so when the person talks to me I can just talk via aim.

ah! Gotcha!
Nope
Never saw anything that would allow to use AIM protocol. It looks like you would need to get some kind of a java server/client. Otherwise you are into running executables on visitors' machines. Perhaps you can find something on http://sourceforge.net
Do search on "chat"

Why would you want it on your site? There is one on www.aim.com
Or is it a big deal that they wouldn't have a screenname?

It is, most people who are potential clients don't have AIM.

This is exactly the problem. You can't send them a message to any of the known messaging systems unless they have an account with one of them, and unless you know what this account is, and unless they have accept messages from all.
Go to Hotscripts.com. It's still one of the best sources of scripts out there.
This link will take you right to Customer Support scripts.

There is actually a way you can do this. You just make an account for the site, and every user that access the script, it will log into AIM under that screen name.
The only problems you will have is if you have a lot of people accessing it, well then your going to run into problems with AIM banning your screen name
I wouldn't reccomend doing this hehe.

no you just make multiple accounts and /or a script that creates a new account for each new user or something.

But, if you make it so it creates a new username everytime you have a new session, (lol), then you would definately get your Server IP banned, like within minutes.
The multiple accounts thing could work though, that's not too bad of an idea.

Actually, you can if you qualify for access AOL's development environment. There are a number of SOAP calls and other API features for creating accounts, sending messages, etc..
Obviously enrollment for this is very strict for a variety of spam and security issues.

Well, we're obviously getting beyond the point now of the orginal topic, something easy to integrate into a website for customer support
Developing an API for a simple customer service that integrated into AIM, well that's just painstaking and timekeeping

I'd be easier and faster to build a simple live help script, or an existing one. I haven't found any I really like, but www.stardevelop.com has my vote right now.

I realize I'm almost two years late on the original question but for some reason this thread was brought back from the dead.
Live support? Sure. Try Campfire. Check out the example uses.
