best forum?

not sure this is the right forum for the question, but i am thinking of adding a board to my website, and since vBulletin is not free, the options are:

simple machines http://www.simplemachines.org/
phpbb http://www.phpbb.com/

does anyone knows which is better?
which is more easy to use? (lets not forget that i am a woman...lol)
which can be fully customized? etc etc etc...
thanks!

I started using phpBB for my forums. I like the idea that there are many freely available themes for it. A lot of them look really good. And, the themes were easy to install.

I use phpBB for years now and when you mod it to suit your needs it's a great forum software, and phpBB looks better than vB. (apart from some totally customized forums like v7n)

Have a look at my forums here.

thanks for ur replies guys!
Ferre, your forum looks very... addicting serious, I was afraid that phpbb will appear way too "amaturish" comparably to vB, and was determinded to many my own skin anyway... I see it can be just as good ...ty!

Thanks for the compliment Lorelei, the design of my forums has been done by the same designer who did these v7n forums. sadly enough, the last thing I heard was that he quit designing. he also did a "dark toned" skin for my boards, for those members who find dark colors to be more easy on the eyes. That dark skin looks awesome too.

You can find some good themes for phpBB here, here and here. Between those 3 sites, there are many to choose from.

Of the two I would say SMF. SMF has a lot more features than phpBB, such as attachments, spell check, sub-boards, a quick reply box, unlimited poll options, news feeds from forum content etc.

If you want any of those features, then SMF would be your best option.

@ ccole1968 ... already made my own

since the post where i was asking which software to choose, i already downloaded it and the development of skin gonna be complete soon... (if u r curious http://loreleiweb.com/forum/index.php )

BUT... ok, i can modify many things there, but silly q: how do i modify the whole lot in the header? i want to organize the menu in a different order and add other links there, but i don't seem to find the template file that controls it.. any idea where is it hidden?

Ferre, i bet u know, urs look fully customized

I have to agree with using phpbb. I have used it a couple times now. Very easy to use and set up.

Also, from what I hear, it's pretty easy to hack...

I guess that's because it's so popular.

no no no... not that question is up to date...lol
i have already installed phpbb (try and hack me ) and made a skin for it to match the site, but...

the template itself needs a lil` change, i want to organize the menu differently. when i view the source i can see the entire html structure which i can modify, if i only knew where the hell that template is hidden...

None of that canned crap, though. It tastes like styrofoam or something. Only the finest, old-fashioned whipping cream and real vanilla and sugar!

Lorelei, sorry that I didn't catch this question sooner. You can do that in the template you are changing in the /overall_header.tpl and to modify the footer is /overall_footer.tpl

Yes, I did edit those templates for a forum of mine. They should be in a folder called templates... I think.
