FF, IE, Opera, Borders, Padding, Margins

What are the rules for each?

Firefox seems standards compliant, Opera seems to mess around with Padding/Margin, and IE just doesn't give a damn.

Its really annoying when you make a great layout for FF to find that IE trashes it and Opera stuffs images outside borders etc.

Welcome to web design 2006. There are many established patches, fixes and hacks for IE. Eventually I just resorted to designing such that the slight differences didn't totally trash the page. Search "box model" for all the info you can swallow.

We can only hope that MS gets its act together soon.

You can always try adding this to your stylesheet to eliminate all whitespace and specifiy your own padding/margin per element.

* {
padding:0;
margin:0;
}
